Apply for a petroleum licence

Businesses need a licence to store petroleum so that we can make sure it is kept and dispensed safely.

Petroleum is any product of crude petroleum with a flashpoint below 21 degrees centigrade. 

It includes:

  • petrol 
  • benzene
  • pentane

If you store between 15-275 litres of petroleum spirit you need to notify us in writing at:

You need to apply for a licence to store over 275 litres of petroleum in either a retail or non retail petrol filling station. This includes commercial sites and farms.

Before you apply

You will need to know the fuel grade and working capacity of all of your tanks.

You can apply for either a one year or three year licence. The current fees are set out in the table below.

After you apply

You should be contacted within 14 calendar days of submitting your application. If not, please contact us.

You can appeal to Suffolk County Council if your application is denied.
