Nationality Document Return Service

How you can use the Nationality Document Return Service with or without the option to apply for your passport at the same time.

You can apply for British Citizenship at GOV.UK

  • The documents which support your online application can be sent to The Home Office using the Document Return Service.
  • We will copy your documents and arrange for them to be sent securely to The Home Office.
  • You have the option to apply for your passport at the same time.
  • To use this service you must ensure you have booked an appointment with us before you submit your on line application.
  • This is to be sure there is no more than 10 days between submission of your online application and your document return service appointment.

All appointments are held at the Ipswich Register office, Grimwade Street, Ipswich IP4 1LP.

Using the Nationality Document Return Service doesn't guarantee your application for citizenship will be successful.

What you need to bring with you to your appointment


  • Document checklist
  • PNN number
  • Supporting Documents
  • Original Life in the UK Test certificate
  • Completed Referees pages with original photo
  • Identification 
  • Postage fee (see below)
  • optional - completed passport form. Full details of how to apply are further down this page.


  • £42 (excluding passport application)
  • £52 (including passport application)

Both fees include VAT, and are payable at the time of booking the appointment. An additional fee for postage will be charged during the appointment. The amount payable will depend on the weight of the documents we are sending to the Home Office to support your application.

The fee cannot be refunded if you:

  • don't attend your appointment
  • or do not attend the appointment with the correct paperwork

You can apply using the standard British passport application form.

They are available from the Post Office or at the Ipswich Register Office.

Before you apply

You should only complete the sections of the application form:

  • 2
  • 3
  • 4
  • 6 (if applicable)
  • 9


  • Section 1: Applicants within 6 months of their 16th birthday at the time of application must attend the appointment in person
  • Section 2: Don't enter a mobile phone number in Section 2 of the application form. Please enter it in Section 8 instead
  • Section 4: Grandparent's details aren't required The payment mandate on Page 25 of the application guidance must be completed, but don't fill in the barcode section. Please ensure that the security number of the card is entered in the appropriate box.

You don't need to complete section 10, or have 2 photographs certified.

Details of referees will be collected as part of your citizenship application


You need to bring 3 photographs.

The photographs submitted with both applications must be identical (i.e. from the same sitting) and comply with the photo standards as described in the accompanying guidance.

The applicant's name should be written on the back of one photograph.

  • Child passport (under 16): £58.50
