Information and introduction to the Our Place initiative with officers working alongside elected members to develop local service solutions.
Across Suffolk we have a wonderful range of communities – large towns, smaller market towns, and an immense variety of villages and rural communities. Suffolk County Council is looking at how it can respond to the different needs of these communities and to support them in realising their ambitions.
Local County Councillors have a vital role in working with their communities, providing and supporting local leadership, and championing the needs of their communities to enable the public sector to respond. In turn officers must be ready to work with local councillors and to respond flexibly to communities to ensure that we provide a joined up response, bringing together all relevant parts of the County Council, and if necessary our partner organisations, to help individual communities to find solutions to the challenges they face.
This is the Our Place vision: communities determining and articulating their own local ambitions and being able to rely on a responsive public sector that will support them in a coherent and joined up way.
Officers from across the council have been recruited to help support councillors in their division. These ‘our place officers’ have, in addition to their core role, used their expertise, local knowledge and links within the organisation to help councillors facilitate local solutions in their community.
The starting point for conversations has been open access youth clubs, libraries, school crossing patrols and country parks and recreation sites. However Our Place is an evolving approach and it is no longer about finding local solutions for just these four services. It is about how the whole council can meet the challenge and work with and for our communities at a local level.
