Tools to help you with the recruitment process

Help with the testing stage

The National Firefighter Ability (NFA) Tests are part of the written test stage of the recruitment process.

The NFA Tests are made up of a:

  • working with numbers test
  • understanding information test
  • situational awareness and problem solving test

We've created a NFA Tests Preparation and Practice booklet (PDF, 456KB) to help you prepare for these tests.

You may also find it useful to read our test guidance notes (PDF, 115KB) for details of what each test entails.

Help with physical fitness

The work of a firefighter is physically demanding and therefore physical training is important as part of ongoing development.

In order to maintain physical fitness, exercise must be undertaken on a regular basis.

Download a Firefighter Fitness Programme (PDF, 1MB) to provide guidance on developing and maintaining:

  • cardiorespiratory fitness
  • muscular fitness
  • flexibility
  • general health benefits
