Street furniture licence

How to apply for a licence to install street furniture such as benches and notice boards on a public road, pavement or verge.

Suffolk County Council reviews its fees on an annual basis. Please make sure you read through the application form to understand the current fees and conditions before you apply as these fees are generally non-refundable. Applications require 20 working days notice to be processed.

Before you apply

Your application may be rejected if the proposed site is considered to be potentially dangerous to the public.

A licence is needed to place street furniture within the highway. We have a scheme that provides permission to place the following items within the highway:

  • benches or bus shelters
  • flower containers/planters or litter bins
  • village or town signs or notice boards

This list is not exhaustive, and we will consider other items.

Licences are only issued to:

  • district or borough council
  • town or parish council
  • other organisations e.g. Bury In Bloom
  • a member of the public who'll need to provide us with written confirmation of support from their local council.

Contact Highways England on 0300 123 5000 if you want to apply for a licence on a trunk road.
