Statement of community involvement

How local communities, individuals, groups and any other interested parties can be involved in the preparation of documents concerning minerals and waste.

The Statement of Community Involvement (SCI) is a statutory document which sets out how the Suffolk County Council (SCC) will involve community in shaping new planning policies for minerals and waste.

The previous SCI was adopted by SCC’s full council in May 2006. Since this time a number of key changes have made it appropriate to produce a revised version of the document.

The revised SCI was subject to public consultation from 8 September to 23 October 2015. Two responses were received from the statutory consultees - Natural England and Historic England. Both responses were supportive of the principle of meaningful and early engagement of the general community, community organisations and statutory bodies in local planning, both in terms of shaping policy and participating in the process of determining planning applications.

On 10 November 2015 the Statement of Community Involvement 2015 was adopted by Suffolk County Council's Cabinet. This document takes into account further updates to planning legislation and has also been expanded to include additional information on the Duty to Co-operate, Supplementary Planning Documents and the Sustainability Appraisal.
