Applications process for Spare Seats to open on Friday


Suffolk County Council’s spare seat application process will open on Friday (23 October 2020).

Parents of children who are not eligible for SCC funded school travel, may wish to buy a spare seat for their child to travel to and from school on an SCC vehicle. Spare seats can never be guaranteed because they depend upon how many children eligible for funded travel are using a route. This year there will be fewer seats available than in previous year because we have had to re-organise travel routes in response to the pandemic to switch some children from public bus services onto dedicated school transport. The seats will be sold on a first come first served basis.

Councillor Mary Evans, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills said:

“I am pleased that we are able to open the application process for spare seats ahead of the October half term. While spare seats are never guaranteed, I recognise that these are important transport options for some families. We are contacting parents who have been in touch with us requesting a spare seat. However, I would urge every parent who would like a spare suit to get in touch with us as quickly as possible.

“We will be prioritising spare seat applications and are hoping that we can get passes out to families by the end of half term when schools return.  Parents must also upload a photo and make their payment promptly so we can process their application swiftly and issue their child’s pass.”

If SCC are unable to offer a spare seat, parents should contact the operator directly for the price of seats on any commercially operated public transport routes, or routes run by schools as these may be cheaper. The contact details for bus companies operating in Suffolk are available online at
