Sustainable transport has a very
important role to play in the future of Suffolk and will help us
achieve our aim of “Creating the Greenest County”. Travel
planning is one area in which both businesses and individuals can
all make a contribution, however large or small, to help reduce
congestion and help our environment.
Suffolk County Council’s team of two Travel Plan Coordinators
have been busy since they started their posts in June. Their
work has concentrated on promoting travel plans to external
businesses in an effort to help workplaces realise the benefits of
establishing a travel plan. To aid businesses a travel plan
support pack has been produced. The pack will include a
guidebook on workplace travel plans and examples of leaflets
designed to encourage staff to use sustainable transport. The
guidebook will advise businesses on the how to engage staff and
build a travel plan that is tailored to the specific needs of their
workplace. There will also be further support to businesses
through a website which will provide advice, links and downloads on
travel plans. The initial focus of the Travel Plan
Coordinators will be to support businesses located in Lowestoft and
Bury St Edmunds.
Everyone can gain environmentally, economically, socially and by
improving their health from taking even small changes in their
daily travel behaviour. By encouraging their staff to use
sustainable transport, businesses can help make Suffolk better from
the inside out and to build on the fantastic work that many people
are already doing. Creating the Greenest County is all about
actions, not words. With the wealth of material and support
available to them to produce a travel plan Suffolk’s businesses
will be able to do just that.
