Traffic management schemes

Investigating traffic problems on Suffolk's roads and introducing appropriate traffic management schemes

Trunk roads are managed by W S Atkins on behalf of the Highways Agency.  Any questions regarding these roads should be directed to W S Atkins rather than Suffolk County Council.

Traffic management measures are introduced to solve an identified traffic problem on one or more roads. To obtain funding for potential traffic management schemes, Suffolk County Council submits an annual bid to Central Government called the Local Transport Plan. Only schemes which can help to achieve the following objectives will be funded by Government (and therefore can be introduced by Suffolk County Council):

  • achieve safe travel by reducing accident levels;
  • improve pedestrian safety and accessibility;
  • promote and accommodate the maintenance and improvement of public transport; and
  • promote cycling

The need for a traffic management scheme (and the type of measures to be used) can be identified in a variety of ways - for example, there may be a cluster of accidents or the reported concerns of residents which prompt an investigation.

Suffolk County Council may introduce traffic management in various forms to help achieve the targets and aims of the Local Transport Plan.
