Providing a programme of roadworks to ensure
roads and footways remain in a suitable condition for all highway
users throughout Suffolk.
Roadworks are essential to the safety, efficiency and comfort of
journeys. We regularly inspect and maintain roads
so we can deal with problems before they need major work which
would result in more disruption and cost. Roadworks are
scheduled for less busy periods to cause least disruption,
taking into account factors affecting traffic levels such as school
term dates and bank holidays. Some work is undertaken at
night-time, when there is much less traffic on roads, but only if
this would not disturb local residents.
To help us schedule roadworks, regular meetings are held with other
local authorities, utility companies (eg electricity, gas,
telephones, water), the emergency services and local transport
operators and wherever possible we carry out works at the same time
so that a road only needs to be dug up once. However,
sometimes emergency works are needed and our priority is to make
the road safe as quickly as possible.
We aim to tell businesses, customers and motorists about any major
works in advance. We do this through:
- warning signs at each location to direct the public, with a
helpline number for any queries;
- an up to date interactive map of current and planned works on
the road for a large area of the UK;
- information in the local media;
- letter drops to any affected properties.
To view roadworks scheduled by Suffolk County Council and utility
companies please click on the link to Elgin (Electronic Local
Government Information Network) website
http://suffolk.elgin.gov.uk.
Elgin is a web site that provides an interactive map that covers
all the roads in Suffolk and can be used to search for current and
planned roadworks in neighbouring counties as well as across the
UK. Please note that not all roadworks are included eg works
undertaken by private builders.
The Elgin site requires Adobe SVG Viewer. Unless you already
have this installed on your computer, you will be prompted to
install this free viewer whenyou first visit the site.
Elgin is operated by Jacobs on behalf of participating local
authorities and the information on this site is kept current by
automatic data feeds every 30 minutes from local authorities'
streetworks registers and the Highway Agency.
Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience
roadworks may cause you. If you have any enquiries about works
where the promoter is Suffolk County Council, please contact your
