Safety audit practice and guidance

Road safety audit

A system has been developed over the past two years to provide a robust and easily understood method that will give us all confidence in the safety of road schemes introduced onto the highway network for which Suffolk County Council is the highway authority.

Safety Audit is the application of safety principles to new scheme design and alterations to the highway, to prevent accidents occurring or to reduce their severity. The outcome of the audit is the identification of any potential problems, together with recommendations on how to rectify the problems. It is not a design check or a means of testing the suitability of alternative designs.

Safety Audit is a process aimed at helping to produce safe highway designs but the contents of the report produced are not negotiable.
