Safety of walls next to the highway

Making sure that walls supporting the road are maintained.


Walls that support the road, which were built to do so, on public roads in Suffolk may be a Suffolk County Council responsibility, with the exception of:

• Trunk roads are managed by Atkins on behalf of the Highways Agency. Any questions regarding walls on these roads should be directed to W S Atkins rather than Suffolk County Council;
• questions about walls supporting the highway in Ipswich should be directed to Ipswich Borough Council.

Walls beside the road are usually the adjoining land-owner's responsibility.

Dangerous walls over 1.5 metres high are dealt with by the district or borough council.
