Maintaining traffic signs.

Traffic signs on public roads are maintained by Suffolk County Council, with the following exceptions:

Street name plates are maintained by district councils and any queries should be directed to your district or borough council.

The County Council maintains traffic signs to the following standards:

Traffic signs on A and B roads

All signs will be cleaned and inspected once a year. However, bollards and signs close to the road which are affected by passing traffic may be cleaned more more often.

Repairs will be undertaken to keep signs legible, and to repair signs which have been damaged and have become unsafe.

Traffic signs on other roads

Signs will be cleaned only where they have become illegible. Priority will be given to regulatory and warning signs.

Repairs will be undertaken to keep signs legible, and to repair signs which have been damaged and have become unsafe. Within available resources.

Damaged or defective road signs that could present a hazard including exposed wiring and overhead cables and wires will be made safe within 24 hours.

A missing, dangerous or misleading mandatory sign, bollard or traffic signal will be rectified within 24 hours.

Higher response standards may be applied in sensitive locations such as those near schools, shopping centres, hospitals, bus stops, dangerous bends and accommodation for the elderly.
