Road salting and snow clearing

We work closely with our weather forecaster and use information from own weather monitoring stations to decide when to spread grit on the roads.

All A and B roads, busy commuter and bus routes are gritted when ice or snow is forecast.  If ice or snow continues we will treat other roads, but only when we know that traffic is moving freely and safely on our main roads.  Priority is always given to roads carrying the most traffic or important bus routes. In very severe conditions there could be considerable delay in clearing snow from some minor roads.

As well as using our own equipment, we have contracts with over 200 farmers and contractors across the county to help with clearing snow and ice. In severe snow conditions, we will carry out snow ploughing throughout the night to try to keep the most important roads passable (this is normally confined to the busier A class roads).  We also clear snow from heavily used pavements, with main shopping streets in town centres given the highest priority, followed by other town pavements and well used cycle tracks.

You can view our gritting routes by using Elgin.  To ensure you are able to find the information you are looking for, please read these guidance notes(PDF, 2MB)  before accessing Elgin.

If you want to clear snow and ice on the pavement outside your property or from public spaces, it's unlikely you'll be sued or held legally responsible for any injuries on the path if you have cleared it carefully - follow the snow code when clearing snow and ice.

We provide grit heaps on request from parish councils so local people can treat known trouble spots that otherwise would be a lower priority for us. Anyone clearing snow on behalf of the Parish Council would be covered under the terms of our insurance for public liabilities providing volunteers have registered with their Parish Council, and read and understood the health and safety points set out in our guidance notes.  More information can be found on the Suffolk Community Emergency Preparedness website.
