Concessionary fares and bus passes

Providing and administering a concessionary fares scheme in Suffolk.

The Transport Acts of 1985 and  2000 entitles certain people to receive a bus pass free of charge which enables the holder to travel free of charge.

Suffolk Saver

Suffolk Saver is the countywide concessionary fares scheme, which is provided by the district and borough councils throughout the county:
  • it can be used on all local bus services;
  • it can be used at any time of day with a few exceptions;
  • it cannot be used on rail or long distance journeys such as express coach services;
  • it is normally issued for one year and can be renewed annually;
  • just show your Suffolk Saver pass when you board the vehicle; and
  • you can also travel further a field, provided your bus journey starts or finishes in Suffolk and does not involve a change of service outside Suffolk.

Details of any special exceptions are available from your district or borough council.

Who is eligible?

Permanent Suffolk residents who are:

  • disabled; or
  • not permitted to drive or likely to be refused a driving licence for medical reasons; or
  • aged over 60.

In Forest Heath District the pass is valid for journeys with Dial a Ride run by The Voluntary Network and the feeder service operated by Brandon Communities partnership. This also applies to the Mid-Suffolk residents who use Borderhoppa services in the area adjacent to Diss, plus some of the services run in the Stowmarket area by Optua.

In both St Edmundsbury Borough and Suffolk Coastal District vouchers for travellers having a “mobility impairment” are available to be spent on community transport or taxis.

Both Babergh and Mid-Suffolk Districts offer vouchers for passengers who have an isolated residence as well as those with a “mobility impairment".
