The sub-region was awarded New Growth Point Status in 2006 in
recognition of the ambitious housing growth targets set in the
emerging East of England Plan. On 1 October the Partnership
submitted to Government its "Framework for Growth", a sub-regional
implementation strategy for the proposals in the Plan.
The Framework sets out the case for funding support from central
government and other agencies, and provides a mechanism for
prioritising bids for investment in infrastructure within the
Gateway. By expanding upon the guidance in the Regional
Plan, the Framework also establishes a context for the preparation
of Local Development Documents by the sub-region's District
Councils.
Ipswich is expected to accommodate the majority of growth over
the next 15 years in the Suffolk part of the Gateway. Key
projects for which the Partnership is seeking support over the
period 2008-2011 include:
- site preparation costs for redevelopment of the site of the
former sugar beet factory at Sproughton
- flood defence works
- reinforcement of electricity supplies to the east of the town,
including Adastral Park
- creation of a "green arc" around the northern and eastern
fringes, including improved public access
Decisions on funding bids are expected before the end of
2007.
