Personnel already within the Service who wish to progress to
higher roles will also need to demonstrate the degree to which they
possess the personal qualities and attributes for the role they are
striving to achieve. In this case, assessment and development
centres will use assessment tools designed to measure the degree to
which personnel possess the personal qualities and attributes for
the role they are aiming to achieve. Therefore, an individuals
potential to take up the next role will be measured using the
Personal Qualities and Attributes (PQA).
How may I use the PQA?
If you know what the PQA are for your current role and the role
you would like to enter in the future, you can start to develop the
necessary PQA, which relate to those roles. For example, if you are
seeking promotion, you can start to think ahead about how you can
demonstrate the relevant PQA at a future assessment and development
centre, i.e. somebody seeking to become a Crew Manager should be
able to demonstrate a commitment to diversity and integrity. Here,
an individual will be asked to provide some written and verbal
evidence to assessors of how they as an individual value diversity.
They will also need to be able to show that they have demonstrated
a fair and ethical approach in all situations when at work.
Such evidence may be provided by an individual's participation
in practical activities at work. For example, by helping recruit
under represented groups into the Service, attending diversity
training sessions or by providing community safety advice to such
groups. There are also many other ways to provide such evidence,
which will be scored.
Reading the PQA documents and getting to know these will help
point you in the right direction.
It will also help to start involving yourself in such activities
and logging these activities, which you think, relate to the PQA.
This will help you remember what you have achieved over time and
will help to form evidence for assessment.
How will the PQA affect my ongoing development?
If at assessment it is identified that you have a weakness in
any area, this will identify the area you need to develop over
time. In this case a personal development plan will be created
which will help to focus your development in the right area/s. It
may be that you need to attend a training course, however, it is
more likely that you will need to take part in practical
activities, which relate to the PQA area/s so that you can
demonstrate the desired attributes. It will be an individual's
responsibility to complete any development
identified.
