So you want to be a firefighter?

Do you see yourself jumping onto a fire engine? Then screaming off into the night, lights flashing and sirens blaring?

Think again! Whilst the role of a firefighter is about responding to incidents, nowadays there's more to being a professional firefighter than wearing a uniform and going to operational incidents.

Our primary role is one of preventing fires and reducing risk.

This means that core to a firefighter's role is helping to educate the community about the importance of fire safety and reducing risk in the community.

Clearly it's still crucial to fight fires and respond to other incidents when they occur - and, in fact, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service is now better trained and better equipped than ever to respond to an increasing range of incidents, from road traffic accidents to large scale disasters. We also get involved with other serious emergency incidents such as those involving shipping, rescues, rail, chemical spillages and flooding.

If you pass the necessary tests, you can look forward to a professional career that gives you the chance to develop continuously in role and, where you have the potential, progress to other roles. You will work with a diverse range of people from different backgrounds, both men and women, different races and religions, to serve the communities of Suffolk.
