Eligibility to become a firefighter

  • Be aged between 17 years and 6 months and 18 years, as a minimum age, to apply as a firefighter.  This ensures that you are at least 18 yrs old when you start.
  • Undergo job specific colour vision checks to establish any confusion between blue & green or black & maroon.
  • Have good hearing to set standards.
  • Satisfactorily pass a medical examination carried out by Fire and Rescue Occupational Health department.
  • Submit a birth certificate or proof of age.
  • If you have served in the armed forces, relevent discharge papers must be produced.
  • Declare any current convictions.
  • Be prepared to serve anywhere in the county.
  • Provide relevant original documentation if asked of permission to work or reside in the UK.
