Safer Neighbourhoods

A safer Suffolk
We all have a role to play in making our communities safer. Suffolk is one of the safest places in the country, where people enjoy a good quality of life. But we know many people are still worried about crime and safety issues where they live and work.

To help address this, a new approach to policing and community safety has been introduced in Suffolk - called Safer Neighbourhoods.

There are now 47 Safer Neighbourhood Teams up-and-running across the county, and what makes them different is that they include councils, community partners and volunteers working alongside the police officers and police staff.

These people will be working together to tackle concerns around crime, anti-social behaviour and safety, in a way that is visible and accessible to communities. The public will also be able to have a real influence on the priorities of their local team.

What are the key aims of Safer Neighbourhoods?

  • Listening to the public to identify their concerns
  • Working with the public to tackle the issues that have been identified
  • Keeping people informed of the progress that’s made

How can I find my local Safer Neighbourhood Team?
There are a number of ways you can search for your team on the Safer Neighbourhoods website – www.safersuffolk.org.uk

If you type in your full postcode, you will be directed straight through to the Safer Neighbourhood Team that serves your area. Or you can look up your parish or local council ward name on the A to Z list. There’s also an A to Z list of all 47 teams.

If you don’t have access to the internet, phone one of the contact numbers in the box at the top of this page, and they will be able to help you.

What will I find on each Safer Neighbourhood Team website?
Each website provides details of the priorities for the team in reducing crime and anti-social behaviour, and a list of who’s in the team. You can also:

  • Keep up to date on what’s happening in your area
  • Find out about your team and how to contact them
  • Give information to your team using an online confidential reporting form and
  • Report problems online including abandoned vehicles, noise nuisance, fly-tipping, and litter

How do the people in the teams work together?
Each team will have a regular tasking meeting where problems and issues identified by the local community will be prioritised for action. By combining the skills and knowledge of a variety of people, problems should be solved more efficiently and effectively than before.

Your team’s priorities will be listed on the Safer Neighbourhood Team website. This website will also give you the opportunity to pass on information to the team or report problems affecting your day-to-day life.

The teams may also organise other events, such as street briefings. At these, team members meet local people at the scene of a problem to discuss their concerns and what actions could be taken to address them.
