DESTINATION GOLD FOR SUFFOLK

An exciting new sporting initiative has been launched in Suffolk.

'Destination Gold' is an innovative approach by the Suffolk SportsAid Foundation to raise money to support the most talented athletes in the county, including Suffolk's brightest 2012 prospects.

The initiative provides Suffolk companies and organisations with an opportunity to associate themselves with a world class athlete, to support them on their journey to 2012, engage their workforce in the excitement of the Games and play their part in Suffolk's Olympic and Paralympic Games legacy.

Local companies, and their staff, have been invited to officially 'adopt' one of the county's aspiring athletes and help them in their ultimate goal of representing Team GB, and Suffolk, at the greatest sporting event in the world - the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The initiative was launched recently at an event in Ipswich.  Joining the local business community were some of Suffolk's brightest 2012 prospects including triathlete Abbie Thorrington, handball player Louise Jukes, powerlifter Zoe Newson, wheelchair racer Brian Alldis, athlete Helen Decker and swimmer Lewis Coleman.

Key supporters of the initiative include double Suffolk Olympian Bill Tancred and Chief Executive of Ipswich Town Football Club, and former Chief Executive of the British Olympic Association, Simon Clegg.

Craig Anderson, Chief Operating Officer with Customer Service Direct, who became the first business to sign up to Destination Gold, said "We are delighted to be supporting such an exciting initiative. As an organisation we have always encouraged our staff, where possible, to get involved in fundraising activities for the local community. Destination Gold is a real opportunity for our staff to engage in a specific fundraising activity, which should bring great satisfaction to all involved. I would sincerely encourage fellow local organisations to get involved with this project." Craig is pictured with aspiring Suffolk triathlete Abbie Thorrington.

The Suffolk SportsAid Foundation was first launched in 2007, inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to create a legacy for elite sport in Suffolk. In partnership with Sports Aid and Suffolk Sport the aim of The Foundation is to raise money to support Suffolk's talented sportsmen and women to achieve their goals. The Foundation has already awarded fifty grants to talented up and coming sportsmen and women from across the county in a range of sports.
