Rising To The Challenge Suffolk

Gymnastic Joy for Lowestoft

Some of the world’s best gymnasts will train and prepare for the London 2012 Olympic Games in Lowestoft, it has been announced.

The Canadian Gymnastics Federation has signed a ‘memorandum of understanding’ with Waveney Gymnastics Centre signalling their intent to use the Suffolk town as their base for their final preparations before they compete at the London 2012 Games.

Jeff Thompson, the Programme Director for Gymnastics Canada said "Gymnastics Canada is very pleased to be returning to the Waveney Gymnastics Club for its final preparation camp leading into the 2012 Olympic Games. The Team enjoyed tremendously the hospitality and service from the club during its training camp there prior to the 2009 World Championships in London. That service and hospitality, combined with a World Class facility, made it the obvious choice of where to train during the crucial final weeks of preparation for the Olympics."

The announcement is a major coup for Waveney Gymnastics Centre which has established itself as one of the foremost facilities of its type in the country. Equipped with the same make of apparatus that will be used in 2012 it is hoped to attract at least one more team to the facility to prepare for 2012. Commenting on the announcement Centre Manager Vikki Rogers said “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. We are determined to seize it with both hands not just for the club but also for the town and the community”.

Canada becomes Suffolk’s third confirmed pre-games training camp to date with Rwanda committed to Bury St Edmunds and Azerbaijan having signed a ‘memorandum of understanding’ with Ipswich.
