LONDON 2012 INSPIRED PROJECT SHORTLISTED FOR AWARD

Suffolk County Council is celebrating after being shortlisted in the Tackling Health Inequalities category of the prestigious Community Partnership Awards.

The short-listing recognises the work of Suffolk County Council and a range of partner organisations in developing the London 2012 inspired Healthy Ambitions Suffolk Challenge.  The aim of the challenge is to motivate children to fit one hour’s sport and physical activity into their everyday lives and eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. It demonstrates how easily and simply they can achieve the challenge by doing lots of different things such as organised sport, walking, cycling, gardening, dancing or simply playing in the park.

To date, over 6,000 children have recorded 85,000 hours of sport and physical activity as a consequence of the Suffolk Challenge.

Councillor Rosemary Clarke, Suffolk County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Sport, Culture, Diversity, Health and Wellbeing said, “We are really pleased to be shortlisted for this award, as it not only recognises our own hard work, but also the tremendous efforts of all the schoolchildren who have taken up the Challenge so far.   The real success of this initiative is the difference it makes to the lives of the children who take part and they should feel very proud of their individual achievements.”

Delegates from Suffolk County Council and NHS Suffolk, including Chief Executive Andrea Hill will make a presentation to a board of ‘industry experts’ in London on the 11 December 2009.  The winner will be announced on 4 February 2010 at an awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
