LONDON 2012 BUSINESS EVENT FOR LOWESTOFT

Businesses in north Suffolk are to be given the opportunity to hear about how they can bid for contracts for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

A free breakfast event will take place on Tuesday 9th March 2010 from 8am to 10.15am at the OrbisEnergy Centre in Lowestoft and will introduce businesses to the range of up and coming contract opportunities available from the 2012 Games.

Delivering the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will require the procurement of goods, works and services from an enormous range of firms. An expected 7,000 direct contracts which, together with supply chain opportunities, will create around 75,000 opportunities in a wide range of sectors from construction, engineering and manufacturing to creative, merchandising and retail.

Only recently the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) announced that it was set to tender £700 million of goods and services required to stage the Games in 2012. The vast majority of this business will go through CompeteFor, which is the online service for matching potential suppliers with Games related business opportunities.  Companies not signed up to CompeteFor risk missing out on potentially lucrative contracts.

In terms of catering alone the London 2012 Games will be the largest peace-time catering operation in the world. Over 14 million meals will be served during the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, across 40 locations.  LOCOG is responsible for feeding the 15,000 athletes across the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.  It is estimated that to do this will require in excess of 25,000 loaves of bread , 232 tonnes of potatoes, 82 tonnes of seafood, 31 tonnes of poultry items, 100 tonnes of meat, 75,000 litres of milk, 19 tonnes of eggs, 21 tonnes of cheese and 330 tonnes of fruit and vegetables.

Cllr Bruce Provan, Portfolio Holder for Skills and Economic Development at Suffolk County Council said “This event is a must for companies in Suffolk that are looking to develop their business and access new opportunities.  In addition to London 2012 opportunities a wealth of untapped public sector contract opportunities exist and this event will help companies raise their game and access those contracts”.
