For the reasons
already given, not every entry included all the information
asked for. In some cases only the surname and initial are
given; in others a man's rank, regiment or battalion might be given
incorrectly. This was because in most cases the information
available locally had come from the men's families, sometimes
several years after their deaths, and not from official
sources. So
this is only a starting point for research into an individual's
service in the War, or an in-depth study of the men from a
particular town or village.
Other places to search might be:
- Detailed research has recently been done on some communities in
Suffolk. For example, email
Rod Gibson for information on Kedington, Barnardiston, Great
and Little Wratting, Haverhill, Stoke-by-Clare and
Withersfield.
- For information about names on any Suffolk War Memorial and
more information about the Roll of Honour,

- Local sources of information include newspapers, parish
magazines, rolls of honour and lists of local men serving in the
forces. For information on what is available
contact us.
- Records in
the National
Archive.
- Soldiers Died in
the Great War, available on CD-ROM, published by the Naval and
Military Press.
- The Commonwealth War Graves
Commission Debt of Honour database.
- The Cross of Sacrifice series of books by S D and D B Jarvis (6
volumes, based on the CWGC registers).
- The indexes of military deaths at the
Family
Record Centre.
