Dr Pat Murrell
Known for keeping a fine table in her
Northgate Street home in Bury St Edmunds, Lady Mary Cullum's
unpublished manuscript collection of recipes forms part of the
Cullum Archive in Bury Record Office. With a keen interest in
the Cullums and Georgian cookery, Pat Murrell's lecture offers a
feast of delights - garnished with a few 'edible' documents and a
glass of wine.

10.30am Lecture by Suffolk Archaeologist
Edward Martin: "Display and Pleasure: banqueting
houses and their garden settings"
Banqueting houses
were pavilions or 'houses of pleasure' for relaxed dining,
entertainment or quiet withdrawal in or about the gardens of the
Tudor and Stuart gentry. This talk will explore their
origins, use and garden contexts.
12.00pm Lunch
1.30pm Dr Pat Murrell will give
the second lecture of the day: "Elizabethan
Banqueting"
A culinary exploration by Pat Murrell of
the sugary confectionary, comfits, wet and dry sweetmeats of a
grand meal's final or 'banqueting course' served in Tudor and early
Stuart banqueting houses. Samples available for the
sweet-toothed!
3.30pm Finale: A chance to see some of the
documents and maps that inspired and informed the
lecturers.
