The Start…Succeed…Sustain – Suffolk 2012 Conference and

Since the 6 July 2005 announcement of London’s successful bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games there has been a great deal of excitement, activity, discussion and media coverage about the likely impact of the world’s largest event on our region, and our Suffolk localities.

This site will be used as a regular communication tool to inform and clarify how as a partnership a difference can be made to Suffolk’s contribution to a successful Olympic games, and to ensure we maximise the benefits to our locality and its proximity to East London over the next six years and beyond.

Opportunities

The legacy of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics will not just be about a regeneration of East London, its infrastructure and communities. The potential impact for Suffolk and the East of England must be recognised as a once in a generation opportunity to help us achieve our shared long term ambitions to raise the quality of life for our citizens, and create ambitious, safer, healthier and prosperous communities.

The evidence regarding the potential economic and social impact of a London Olympic Games on the Eastern region, and Suffolk, with our proximity to the host city is immense. To benefit from this will necessitate a high degree of co-ordination between public sector bodies and between these bodies and the private and voluntary/community sector.

How is Suffolk organising itself to maximise the benefits of London 2012?

A Suffolk Steering Group has been established, made up of partner organisations from across health, tourism, education, culture, sport, business and skills, alongside local authorities and the voluntary and community sector. The Group meets quarterly (see Events and working groups  for papers) and its responsibilities include:

  • Leading Suffolk’s approach to 2012, developing a strong partnership across the County, engaging as wide a range of partners as possible.
  • Producing a Business Plan and Vision for Suffolk, highlighting the actions to be taken to maximise the benefits of the Games for the County.
  • Co-ordinating the activities of the thematic working groups
  • Acting as the link between Suffolk and the Regional and National bodies working on 2012.
  • Identifying and engaging with and providing advice on potential funding sources.

The Suffolk Vision and Business Plan have now been developed and are currently open for consultation.
