Bookstart logo We run a Bookstart storytime session for pre-school children every Thursday morning 9.45am - 10.15am.

Sunday activities

Come and enjoy our children's activities 10.30am - 12.00noon every Sunday at Sudbury Library:

In line with the BBC Breathing Places – Do One Thing Campaign, the Library will be holding a month of events to encourage children to ‘to do one thing’ towards helping nature and wildlife.  We will have Activity Quiz and drawing  sheets for children to take away and complete at home.
Sunday Activity
2 November Bonfire Night and Leaf Rubbing - Join us by bringing in large leaves and twigs to help us make the ‘bonfire’, do some leaf rubbing and draw pictures of a Guy.  We also have leaf activity sheets for you to take home with you.
9 November Bird Song - Learn different bird songs, colour in bird activity sheets, draw birds for our display board and we have ‘make your own bird feeder’ activity sheets to take home.
16 November Mini Beasts - Join our Suffolk Wildlife Trust Officer and their ‘mini-beasts’!!  Hear all about their habitat and lifestyle, what we can do for them and draw your own mini-beast!
23 November

Recycling Day - Make your own recycling poster to encourage your friends and family to recycle more!

7 December Letter to Santa and Christmas cards - Come to the library and make cards for your family and friends
14 December Christmas decorations and winter snowflakes - Make some glittery decorations for the library Christmas tree and some to take home as well
21 December Silly monsters and Dinosaurs, Gruffalo and Dennis the monster - Get creative and make some silly monsters
28 December Calendar making for 2009 -
Nearly the New Year so come and make some calendars

'Top Time - Years Ahead' older people's social club

A group aimed at older people and carers with a friendly and varied programme of events. Runs every Tuesday, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. Find more details of the forthcoming programme here or contact the library for further information.

Sudbury Library offers free UK Online sessions every Wednesday morning at either 9.30am or 10.45am.  Please contact the library to book a session.


Past Events

Family History Day

On Sunday 9th November we held a special free family history event. Members of the Suffolk Family History Society were on hand to help members of the public get started, give advice and show some of the best resources for tracing your family history.

The Big Draw

BigDraw As part of the celebrations for The Big Draw this year, Suffolk Libraries ran several Sunday drawing events including one at Sudbury.

On Sunday 26 October local illustrator Peter Gray ran a session of character drawing from books and imagination.

African History Month

We are ran a number of events in October to coincide with African History Month as detailed below:

We also had a Book & CD Display of R&B, Reggae and Soul Music Icons as well as a Childrens Book Display of stories & poetry about Africa & the Caribbean.

National Year Of Reading - Gruffalo visit

Gruffalo with scool children As part of the National Year Of Reading, Sudbury Library welcomed the Gruffalo as a special guest on 25th September. The Gruffalo visited the libraries Bookstart session, then went on for a trip to Great Waldingfield School and the Phoenix Children's Centre where he helped with reading The Gruffalo book and singing the Gruffalo Song. After the day's fun and games The Gruffalo also helped give out competition prizes at the Sudbury Library Team Read presentation ceremony - see further information below.

Reading Challenge

During the summer children had the opportunity to take part in this year's reading challenge ... Team Read. All they had to do was read 6 books...

Presentation of certificates was on Thursday 25 September.

We also ran a 'make your own medal competition' during the summer to coincide with Team Read - congratulations to the winners:

Special event - Storytelling with writer Robert Crighton

On Saturday 5 July Robert Crighton, the award winning writer and performer was in the library, telling a series of interconnected stories from around the globe entitled "A Telling of the World"

This event was run in partnership with Sudbury & District United Nations Associations.

National Year of Reading

National Year of Reading logo

One of the world's leading paper engineers, Robert Crowther was in Suffolk on Tuesday 11 March to show children the techniques for making their own pop-up books. He worked with children from Woodhall Primary School.
