Baby Café in the Library
New and pregnant mums celebrated the official launch
of a breastfeeding drop-in service in Felixstowe Library during
World Breastfeeding
Week. Councillors Rosemary Clarke and Patricia O'Brien joined
staff and health visitors from Suffolk PCT on 3 August 2007 to
officially launch the service.
Felixstowe is the first public library in the UK to have a
Baby Café. So far, it
is attended by up to 20 women at a time. Suffolk Primary Care Trust
Children's Services health visiting cluster team and Suffolk County
Council worked together to provide the Baby Café.
The free drop-in is held every Friday, from 10.30am to 12.00pm in
Felixstowe Library and follows on from the library's very
successful and well attended
Bookstart sessions. Women can socialise with other
mothers, get health advice from professionals on hand and they can
also access the library's resources for children, such as
Bookstart.
Councillor Graham Newman, portfolio holder for the council's Adult
and Community Services and Felixstowe Coastal councillor, said:
"Felixstowe Library is the first in the UK to have a Baby Café in a
library. I think it is a great credit to the community in
Felixstowe that this new initiative has been embraced so
enthusiastically. I'm also proud that Suffolk County Council is
leading the way in offering new services of real benefit to local
people - even the very young - at such an important time in their
lives, turning the library into a true centre of community
activity. The Council and the local NHS are offering a great
service here to new mums and their babies - why not come and see
what's available?"
