Sunday activities

The library is open every Sunday, come along and enjoy a relaxed friendly atmosphere where you can chat, listen to music, surf the net or try IT taster sessions, as well as borrow books, films, music and games. About Sundays.

We also run additional activities for children every Sunday - please see details at the top of the page.

Book Groups

We have three different book groups who meet in the Bury Library Conference room on Tuesday afternoons:

National Year Of Reading

Author Visit - Friday 5 December, 4.30pm - 6.00pm, Bury Library Conference Room.

Come along to the library and meet Nick Sharratt, author of "Don't Put Your Finger in the Jelly, Nelly" and illustrator of "Pants" , "Eat Your Peas" and the Jacqueline Wilson books.

To book your place, please contact Bury Library. Booking is advisable as places are limited.

National Year of Reading logoWriting Workshop - How to write women's fiction

On Saturday 1 November Louise Allen visited Bury Library.  She ran two writing workshops which were attended by about nine people.



The Big Draw 2008

As part of the celebrations for The Big Draw this year, Suffolk Libraries ran several Sunday drawing events including one at Bury St Edmunds.

On Sunday 19 October the children's book illustrator, Algy Craig Hall visited the library.

Algy graduated last year from the Cambridge MA in children's book illustration, and his first book "Fine As We Are" was published in March this year.


National Bookstart Day - 'Pirates Ahoy'

On Friday 10 October 2008 we held a pirate themed Bookstart Party to celebrate National Bookstart Day.  There was an extended Tot Rock session, storytime and rhymes as well as a drink and some edible treasure at the end!  Some of the staff dressed up as pirates too (Anna pictured on the left, Kate on the right)!

Georgian Gem Weekend 13 and 14 September 2008

Not Just Jane – Women Writers in Georgian Times

Library staff dessed in georgian costume helping customerVisiters were able to pop along to the library over the heritage weekend to find out about the famous and not so famous women writers of the Georgian period, such as Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, Elizabeth Inchbald and Elizabeth Bonhote.

We also arranged Georgian Gem themed children’s craft sessions, including mask-making, fan-making, silhouettes, and make your own matchbox or shoebox Georgian theatre.

Reading Challenge

This summer children had the opportunity to take part in this year's reading challenge ... Team Read. All they had to do was read 6 books...

We had our presentations of certificates on Tuesday 16 September and Wednesday 17 September.  Councillor David Lockwood attended both the presentations.


National Falls Prevention Awareness Day

Our Top Time session on 25 July was designed to relate to the National Falls Prevention Awareness Day which was on 24 June 2008.  The Top Time session included a chair based yoga demonstration by Carole from the Self Centre, a talk by Sue Nicholson, Information on Prescriptions Co-ordinator and a talk by Ann Hunt, the Falls Prevention Co-ordinator.

National Year Of Reading - Author Visit

National Year of Reading logoAs part of Suffolk's celebration of the National Year of Reading Bury St Edmunds library was visited by children's author Pat Hutchins on Wednesday 25 June in collaboration with Waterstone's Book shop. The author signed books in the library foyer.


National Science and Technology Week 7-16 March 2008

In March we celebrated National Science and Technology Week with a special 'touchy feely' book making activity - 'That's not my book' craft activity. Children of all ages were invited to come and use thick paper, card and lots of different fabrics to create their own book based on the Fiona Watts series "That's not my...(Train, Dinosaur, Fairy etc)".
