Books about mental health and relationships

Anyone registered with a Suffolk GP can use this service which has been developed by health professionals in Suffolk in partnership with Suffolk Libraries staff.

What is the book list about mental health and relationships?

The book list about mental health and relationships is part of a project to help patients with mild and moderate mental health problems.  A GP, practice counsellor, a member of the Community Mental Health Team or any other health professional will be able to recommend a book from the list of self-help books now available from any library in Suffolk.  Take the recommendation to any library and collect the book.

Do I have to be a member of the library?

Yes - but if you are not yet a member, any member of library staff will help you to join and it's free.

What if the book is unavailable?

The library service has lots of copies of the books you have been recommended.  If it isn't there, library staff will be able to reserve you a copy free of charge, or you can reserve it for yourself using the library website Suffolk libraries direct  We will buy extra copies of any title which becomes oversubscribed.

Is the service confidential?

Yes.  Library staff will treat all information as confidential.

Can books really help?

There is very good evidence that books can help people who have emotional problems.  This book list about mental health and relationships has been specially chosen for their quality by health professionals in Suffolk.  Of course, not everyone will be helped in this way.  If you have tried really hard to use the book, but find that your difficulty or distress persists, then you need to return to your health professional who recommended the book for further advice.
