Advice on selecting library stock
We can provide booklists to help you to fill gaps in your school
library stock, either as a follow-up to work that we have done in
your school library, or needs that you have identified.
If you are planning to invest a large amount of money in improving
your school library, we can help you to restock
comprehensively.
Schools who order books via Suffolk SLS receive 22 per
cent discount on orders, plus the option of library processing
(at a small extra charge per book).

We also offer
accompanied book-buying trips and a book-ordering service via
"Petranet", our supplier's
web site -
contact your local Advisory Librarian for more information and
a log-in and password to access "Petranet".
Please note that the book ordering service is only available to
subscribing SLS customers.
Computerising your school library
We can give you advice on appropriate software to buy - for most
primary and middle schools, we normally recommend Junior
Librarian, produced by
Micro-Librarian Systems.
For high and upper schools, there is more choice of system -
please contact us for advice.
We can offer a range of advice and support to help you to install
and implement your chosen system.

Improving your library environment
We can help you to make your library an exciting and welcoming
place for pupils and staff. We are able to provide advice on
improving the layout of your library, and on new shelving and other
furniture.
This could be anything from a minor revamp to a project for a whole
new library. For larger projects, we recommend a range of
specialist library shelving companies, who offer a free design and
quotation service.
Recruiting and developing your library staff
We can help you to recruit, train and evaluate your school library
staff.
For high and upper schools, this can include advice on job
descriptions and grades, and help with interviewing. We also offer
mentoring support for staff in post.
For middle and primary schools, we can help with recruitment where
appropriate, and we can offer mentoring and support to help
inexperienced staff.
In addition, we offer a range of
training courses for school library staff.
Revamping your library stock
We can help you to overhaul your library stock, to make it
more relevant and accessible for staff and pupils.
We can edit your stock, to remove out-of-date or inappropriate
titles, ensure that the classification is current, and audit the
stock, to show the strengths and weaknesses in subject coverage.
Contact your local Advisory Librarian to find out more.
Library evaluations
We can help you to ensure that your library is effective
in supporting teaching and learning in the school. Our
evaluation will review your existing provision and make
recommendations for improvement and development, allowing you to
ensure that the library is included in the school's
self-evaluation process.
