Dignity in Care Action Day at the County Library, Ipswich, 25 February 2010      

Your right to be treated with respect" - a day to promote the dignity of people receiving care.

Activities included Suffolk Family Carers' Caring Through Time exhibition, displays from Suffolk Libraries Health Information for You service and Suffolk InfoLink and a chance to find out about becoming a Dignity Care Champion.

At 2pm there were short presentations by Jacqui Martin, Chief Executive of Suffolk Family Carers and Councillor Bryony Rudkin.




Beating the winter blues with your library, 1-5 February 2010

During the week Suffolk's libraries held a Beat the winter blues campaign. The idea of the campaign was to shake off the winter blues, by promoting positive mental health and opportunities to try something different or learn information that could help. A wide variety of events were held, including advice drop-in sessions, book displays, quizzes, visits from health professionals and special events at Top Time sessions.



Creative writing workshop for people affected by cancer, 13 October 2009

A writing workshop for people affected by cancer, either personally or as a friend or carer, was held at Ipswich library on Tuesday 13th October. The workshop was led by Catherine Tutton, who previously worked for Macmillan, and provided an opportunity for people to express themselves through creative writing.

Beccles Library held a fortnight of events to promote health and wellbeing, linking in with World Mental Health Day on October 10. Each day had a specific theme, and there were activities and events ranging from dance, music and exercise to poetry, literature and relaxation. There was also information from local organisations and a chance to find out more about welfare rights, volunteering and support groups. The fortnight began with a healthy walk starting and finishing at the Library and also included a Living Library event.

Living Library events, 6, 9 and 10 October 2009

Following the first Living Library at Felixstowe in June, there were similar events at Beccles Library on October 6, Gainsborough Library (Ipswich) on October 9 and Bury St Edmunds Library on October 10. This time the focus was on mental health and wellbeing, and the 'books' were people with experience of living with a mental health condition or caring for someone else.

Readers were able to borrow a 'book' for a 30 minute chat in the library, to ask questions, share their experiences and learn things they might not find in printed books.


All being well Roadshow, 2 August 2009

Suffolk librariesDancers at the All being well roadshow took part in this fun-filled day which took place on the Cornhill in Ipswich. The event was designed to help improve and promote healthier lifestyles through three main topics: healthy eating, regular physical exercise and good mental health.

A wide range of activities and taster sessions were held to give people fun ideas on how to get active along with information on the organisations taking part.

Suffolk Information on Prescription and Suffolk InfoLink were present to promote the services with a display and access to the Internet in order to demonstrate the website.  


Living Library, 20 June 2009

On Saturday 20 June 2009 Suffolk Libraries held their first Living Library event.

You could find out what it is like to be a family carer, live with diabetes, recover from frequent falls or support someone with dementia.

People borrowed a human “book” (someone with experience) for a 30 minute chat in the library! There were living books on caring, diabetes, dementia and falling.

People could ask questions … share their experiences … learn things they might not find in printed books …..

Suffolk Information on Prescription was launched at Bury St Edmunds Library on 19 September 2007

Suffolk Information on Prescription was a pilot project being tested in the Bury St Edmunds area to help people with either memory loss/dementia or diabetes or people who fall over frequently, to get quality information to help you with everyday living. 

As part of the launch there were also activities to take part in such as dance therapy and chair based yoga.


Sandra Cowie, Director of Mental Health and social care at the Suffolk Mental Health NHS Partnership Trust, said:

"Suffolk Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust is committed to informing people and empowering them to take control over decisions which affect them. We are also keen to involve people in planning and designing services.  This pilot demonstrates a successful partnership working across a range of services, and these are the sort of partnerships that we are striving to be involved in, to ensure that mental health becomes everybody's business."
