My Story

  • Mr A was recovering from a brain haemorrhage, but he and his wife had been given little information on his discharge from hospital. When Mrs A first came to the library she was extremely fragile. The library staff spent a long time with her finding information, but also letting her talk things through. A few days later she came back in to say it had been a real help and she had now got some counselling for herself. She looked a different person.

  • Miss W came into the library at the suggestion of her GP. She had just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and was very upset. She lived on her own, had no close family or friends to turn to and was very worried about her diet. She was shown how to use the Diabetes UK website, borrowed several books on diabetes and diet, and took details of the local diabetes support group. When Miss W came to return her books she was far more confident, had read up about diabetes and had also arranged another appointment with the GP with a list of questions that she wanted to find the answers to.

  • Mrs S made contact with the library after receiving a prescription from her husband’s GP.  She wanted information about respite to give her a break as her husband's dementia was worsening. She was put in touch with the Suffolk Family Carers support group. A carer now visits weekly to allow Mrs S to have some time to herself and attend a club she was unable to attend previously.
