Suffolk libraries will be celebrating World Book Day 2009.

Suffolk Celebrated World Book Day on 6 March 2008

On Thursday 6 March 2008, Suffolk libraries celebrated World Book Day across the county. Children's author Richard Waring visited three libraries, and children in another five libraries met Elmer the Elephant and the Blue Kangaroo.

Author Richard Waring visiting childrenRichard Waring visited libraries at Southwold, Halesworth and Aldeburgh and talked to children from local nurseries or primary schools.

See more photos and find out about Richard and his books on our website.

Elmer the elephant visited Chantry, Felixstowe and Stowmarket libraries while children in Great Cornard, Sudbury and Haverhill libraries were able to meet the Blue Kangaroo. Pre school children attending these events were given a World Book Day £1 book token.

Many libraries across the county have their free weekly Bookstart activities on Thursdays so they celebrated World Book Day as well.

Councillor Graham Newman, portfolio holder for adult & community services said "World Book Day should be an important day for all of us, particularly in 2008 - given that this is the National Year of Reading. UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, inspires World Book Day activities now in over 100 countries. One of the reasons that UNESCO is so active in encouraging reading through World Book Day is to work against the ignorance and associated poverty believed to be at the root of much of the war and hatred in the world today. Suffolk Libraries continue to play an important role in bringing people together in developing our understanding and imagination through reading - if you (or your children) are not regular readers, now's your chance!"

On Wednesday 5 March Elmer the Elephant visited Brandon and Lowestoft Libraries and the Blue Kangaroo visited Woodbridge Library for a special Bookstart session.

Find out more about Elmer on his own page on the Random House website. You can search for Elmer the Elephant items in our library catalogue.

Blue Kangaroo has his own page on the Andersen Press website. You can also search for  Blue Kangaroo items in our library catalogue.
