Professional development networks for artists

Artists Professional Development Network (APD)
The Artists Professional Development Network (APD), initiated by a-n in July 2001, is a UK-wide intelligence and exchange forum for organisations that are proactively developing information, advice, training and professional development services for visual and applied artists.

Members range from artist-led organisations to cultural industries bodies and Higher Education institutions.

APD operates informally but effectively, responding to the need for discussion and knowledge-sharing by organising networking events and developing joint projects that strategically extend professional development opportunities for artists and trainers.

Networking artists’ networks (NAN)
The Networking artists’ networks initiative (NAN) was set up by a-n, The Artists Information Company, in 2004, following a period of research and consultation.

NAN aims to facilitate exchange, dialogue and collaboration amongst visual artists, whatever their practice and location. It offers a focus for critical exchange and feedback and through research and mapping, seeks to develop greater awareness of the value of artists’ initiatives, and of artists’ changing professional needs.

Regular updates on the NAN initiative appear in a-n Magazine every month. Commissioned writing resulting from the events is published on the A-N web site.

The Networking artists’ networks initiative actively seeks to create partnerships with artists’ groups and networks and with other organisations concerned with providing development opportunities for artists, to deliver the artists’ events and bursaries programme.
