This page has been created for those residents, schools and businesses, who are part of our waste reduction project, "Suffolk Streets Ahead". This is a project being run on behalf of the Suffolk Waste Partnership, which represents the county, district and borough councils. The partnership manages and improves waste and recycling services for Suffolk to help residents reduce, reuse and recycle more of their waste.
The aim of the Suffolk Streets Ahead project is to make it easier for people to reduce the amount of waste which is sent to landfill.
We have a team of doorknockers who are visiting around 1,000 properties in each district, giving advice to residents on how to reduce waste. They should be out and about on the streets near you from 6th September.
They will be bringing a welcome pack including a reusable bag and local information on your nearest recycling facilities as well as top tips on how to reduce your waste. Please take the time to talk to them and commit to make some waste reduction pledges.
We shall be updating these pages over the next few weeks with more information.
In the meantime, if you have any further queries please contact the project officers at suffolk.recycling@suffolk.gov.uk or at 01473 264581
Which neighbourhoods are you supporting in this project?
We are focussing our efforts on one area in each district or borough. The area is made up of homes, schools and businesses whose bins are collected by the landfill waste vehicles in one day. The areas include parts of;
- East Bergholt
- Elmswell
- Kesgrave
- Haverhill
- Lowestoft
- Mildenhall
- Rushmere area of Ipswich
- Sudbury
I don't live in an area covered by this project, but I'd like to know more about how to reduce my waste.
We'd love to hear from anyone who has made efforts to reduce the waste they send to landfill, as your tips could help others. Please email us at suffolk.recycling@suffolk.gov.uk and we'll post your tips on this site.
The advice we are giving residents includes:
I've heard from a friend who lives within a project area, that you're asking residents to make pledges. Can you tell me more about this?
Research has shown that when people make written pledges, they are more likely to try and keep to them. As we are looking to help people change their behaviour and throw away less waste, we know that if people can keep to pledges they make to us they will make a real difference to landfill.
Our 8 pledges are:
- Buy loose fruit and vegetables
- Sign up to MPS to reduce junk mail
- Cut down on food waste
- Compost at home
- Avoid buying over packaged goods
- Use my local glass, carton & textile banks
- Buy refills when available
- Recycle batteries & electrical equipment
We would encourage everyone to try making a couple of pledges - every action counts!
I am a business in the project area. How can I get involved?
We have a useful business waste pack which you can download from http://www.suffolkrecycling.org.uk/Content.asp?PID=1&SID=27 which includes some tips on how you can reduce your waste.
You can also download waste specific posters from www.fsb.co.uk/ecoposters and display them in your premises.
What's happening in my area?
East Bergholt
We have called on many doors in the East Bergholt area and have now spoken to approximately 300 out of 600 people in this area. Thanks you very much for making Robin, Rose, Anne and Sue welcome. Many of you have made pledges to remind you to reduce your waste and try to put less in your black bin. Remember that you can recycle cartons as well as glass and textiles at the Red Lion Car Park and take batteries to your local HWRC or large supermarket. You can buy your fruit and vegetables loose locally as well as at larger stores. Mr and Mrs Palmer were delighted with their bag and found the information we gave them really useful

We have spoken to the businesses in your area and are hoping that some of them will sign up to a energy and waste review which could save them money as well as helping the environment.
This is a really large area (1400 properties) and our Waste Reduction Officers Finlay and Halle have now spoken to 700 residents. Again we would like to thank you for making our officers so welcome. We have answered many queries from residents and are hoping to set up a scheme with the parish council to help older residents or those who cannot access the recycling centre at the station, to collect glass, textiles and cartons from these residents. We are really delighted that the Parish Council are willing to help in this way and could be a flagship scheme for other areas. On 16th October a local Master Composter was at the Lukewood allotments to help you learn all about how composting at home can reduce your waste and give you an amazing product to use in your garden. Don’t forget to look at the compost bin offers in your reusable bags – they really are a good price and the offer is valid until March next year.

We are working also with the Primary School in Elmswell who are already are very dedicated to all green issues and were recently awarded the Pledge To Recycle Gold Award. They have a very committed staff and are staunch recyclers! The school currently recycles around half its waste, but are now looking at kitchen/dining hall waste and dining hall culture. They have made an action plan which they are now implementing and are considering a food waste collection and also the placement of paper towels with hand driers. We are looking forward to hearing about their results.
Officers will be supporting the school Christmas fair on 3rd December where you could come along and try our smoothie bike, get recipes for using up leftovers and general waste reduction advice.
There are many businesses in Elmswell – the majority of which already have recycling in place. We are talking to these businesses to find if there are any other ways to reduce their waste. Several businesses have already expressed an interest in attending a workshop early in the New Year to discuss waste reduction and energy saving measures. We were very excited to discover that M and J Seafoods are in the process of purchasing a polystyrene processing machine which melts, and compresses the blocks so that it can be reused in the furniture industry.

We are working with Northgate High School, who are very keen to take on the issue of waste. This is a very large school and so this might take us some time! Our Waste Education officer met with a staff member and school council representatives on 24/11/10. The school will now be working on drawing up their action plan. There is enormous potential here and we are looking forward to supporting the school in their endeavours.
