Transnational Ecological Network (TEN) III:
Within the TEN project at Knettishall, flood meadows are being
restored to provide suitable habitat for wading birds and to expand
the range and abundance of existing amphibian populations. The
meadows are part of the Breckland Environmentally Sensitive
Area.
The meadows were drained in the 1970s and sown with perennial
rye-grass as part of agricultural improvements, prevalent
throughout Suffolk during this period. Since purchasing the meadows
in 1990, Suffolk County Council has installed overspill dams to
raise water levels and introduced hay cutting and sheep
grazing.
