Gipping Valley Walks

The backbone of recreation in the Gipping Valley is
the seventeen mile Gipping Valley River Path, which was formerly
the Gipping Navigation towpath along which horses would have pulled
their barged laden with cargo.
The route is maintained to a high standard, and can be followed
from Stowmarket all the way to Ipswich. Although a linear walk, the
footpath passes close by Stowmarket, Needham Market and Ipswich
railway stations enabling the walk to be undertaken in stages,
returning to the starting point by a short train journey – an
option which is becoming increasingly popular.
There are also a number of circular footpaths. These paths often
start at the various railway stations along the river, or from
picnic sites and nature reserves, where there are toilet facilities
and parking. These routes – such as ‘Barking and back again’,
‘Mills and Meadows’, 'Baylham and Beyond’, ‘Charcoal and Churches’,
and ‘Shrubland Park Walk’ take walkers away from the river and
through the changing landscapes to be found on the valley
sides.
Like the Gipping Valley River Path these circular walks are well
signposted and have clear and concise guide leaflets which means
that even less confident walkers can easily follow the routes with
full confidence.
