Purpose

To promote and implement conservation and enhancement of the Suffolk countryside and increase opportunities for people to access and enjoy it.

What we do

  • maintain, legally protect and promote the 5,400km public rights of way network;
  • operate in six Countryside Management Project areas helping local communities to improve their local environment and providing opportunities for enjoying the countryside;
  • promote biodiversity and support the Suffolk Biological Records Centre;
  • promote the conservation and enhancement of the Suffolk landscape and wildlife;
  • provide three country parks and 25 other countryside recreation sites that attract over 1.4million visitors a year;
  • provide a landscape and ecology service with advice and grant aid for improving woodland, ponds, hedgerows and habitats; and
  • provide environmental education opportunities for the public to better understand and enjoy the countryside.

More about the Countryside Service

Working closely with the local community, landowners and various environmental organisations, Suffolk County Council's Countryside Service aims to provide a countryside that is attractive, and accessible to all sections of the community, while safeguarding and enhancing its wildlife, natural and historic features.

The Countryside Service includes rangers, project officers, administrative support, rights of way staff and a county wide service including ecology and landscape officers.

The service also runs events for the public and works with schools to enable learning using the site resources.

We promote the use of public transport to access the countryside and encourage you to look at our Public Transport pages for details of buses. You can also telephone the national Traveline service on 0870 608 2 608 for timetable information. Where public transport is limited, you may find the AA Routeplanner system helpful in planning your route.
