Promoting the conservation, enhancement and
understanding of Suffolk’s distinctive historic
environment.
The Archaeological Service is the major provider of archaeological
conservation services Suffolk by:
- maintaining the unique inventory of known archaeological sites
and historic landscape features in
the
Historic Environment
Record
(HER), formerly the Sites & Monuments
Record (SMR).
- providing advice on appropriate
conservation measures for
archaeological sites and historic landscapes, especially those
threatened by destruction from development and other land use
changes. See

- providing a
contracting
service for the recording of archaeological sites
threatened with destruction. For information about the Field
Projects team and recent work see

- identifying
finds made by residents of the county, as part of the
national
Portable
Antiquities Scheme.
- undertaking archaeological research. For example a study of
East Anglian field systems.
- promoting understanding of Suffolk's Heritage through
publications
, exhibitions, guided walks and lectures.
The Archaeology Service has
developed an
innovative educational package,
The Aggregates Educational Project, relating archaeology to the
minerals extraction industry through practical activities. The
experimental archaeology camps that have taken place so far
can be seen on the
Camp Diaries pages. From this project the Archaeological
Service has developed a comprehensive collection of
Teachers Resources. These resources are designed to develop a
knowledge, interest and enthusiasm for the archaeology of Suffolk's
river valleys. The information will provide teachers with the tools
to explore this landscape and introduce your students to the
excitement that archaeology brings plus develop an understanding of
