Providing initial teacher training opportunities for graduates
in Suffolk and Norfolk
The Suffolk and Norfolk primary and secondary School Centred
Initial Teacher Training programmes (SCITT) and Graduate Teacher
Programmes (GTP) offer opportunities for graduates to train as a
teacher within Norfolk and Suffolk.
Becoming a teacher
To become a teacher you must have an honours degree of 2:2 or
above and have achieved a standard equivalent to grade C in the
GCSE examinations in English, mathematics and science.
All those working in schools will also have to provide a
satisfactory disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau.
The difference between GTP and SCITT
GTP is an employment-based route that gives students qualified
teacher status at the end of the programme. At Suffolk County
Council, we are the designated recommending body and provide a
range of training courses to complement the school-based training
programme.
Primary SCITT is a grant-based route that provides students with
a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and
qualified teacher status (QTS) at the end of their programme. This
route supplies a strong theory input plus significant time on
placement at school.
Foreign students
European Union nationals holding qualifications obtained in the
member states will have rights of recognition in accordance with
the general system directives.
This means that graduates who have studied abroad and have an
overseas degree need to contact the National Academic Recognition
Centre (NARIC) in order to have their degree translated into a UK
equivalent. We will then recognise this equivalent.
