This page gives a summary of the services offered to schools by the Suffolk Speech and Language Initiative Team.

The Speech and Language Initiative is a joint development between Health and Education and is staffed by a team consisting of speech and language therapists, and speech and language teachers.

In each area of Suffolk, there is a mini-team staffed by a part-time (0.4 FTE) speech and language therapist and a (0.4 FTE) speech and language teacher.

The aim of the initiative is raise the achievement of children by building the capacity of schools to support speech and language needs and development.

The Initiative Team delivers ELKLAN training packages designed to support speech and language in the classroom. The courses consist of ten two-hour sessions which are aimed at Teaching Assistants. However, schools that apply for Teaching Assistants to take part in the training are invited to take part in a two-day ‘overview’ for headteachers and teachers to enable them to guide and oversee the delivery of the programme to their children.
