Educational services for children
with visual, hearing and multi-sensory impairments.
This page gives a summary of the services offered to children
with sensory impairments.
- Sensory services are part of the integrated Learning Support
Service which is itself part of Suffolk County Council’s Children
& Young People’s Service. It is located within the Learner
Support section.
- Each team of Learning Support advisory teachers includes
specialists in visual (VI) and hearing impairment (HI). These
advisory teachers provide direct support for children and young
people. They work children from birth (from the point of diagnosis)
and with children in schools and early education settings.
- Suffolk has a number of Hearing Impaired Units for children who
need intensive support.
- Suffolk County Council has a budget to provide specific
training in signing communication. This includes a specific budget
to provide signing interpreters for deaf parents to enable them to
access meetings to discuss their children’s progress, e.g. parents’
evenings.
