Education for Sick Children

This page gives a summary of the services offered by the Hospital Tuition service in Suffolk.

The hospital tuition service is part of Suffolk County Council’s Children and Young People’s Service.  It is located at both Heath Road Hospital in Ipswich and the West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St. Edmunds.

There are two full time teachers, one in each hospital.  A teaching assistant supports the work of the teacher in Ipswich.

The aim of hospital education is to ensure minimal disruption to regular schooling and to provide some continuity in an otherwise strange environment.

Sessions may be taught in the schoolroom, at the bedside with age appropriate education packs and games provided. The pupils have access to a structured core curriculum and a variety of foundation topics.  ICT equipment is available for use.

All children of school age who are well enough are expected to participate.  The hospital teacher liaises with the pupils’ schools and other agencies as required.
