Promoting child development and learning through the
application of psychology
This page gives a summary of the services offered by Educational
Psychologists in Suffolk.
- The Educational Psychology Service is part of Suffolk County
Council’s Children & Young People’s Service. It is located
within the Learner Support section.
- The aim of the service is to promote child development and
learning through the application of psychology.
- Our service priorities focus on four areas of work
-
- Early Years (including the Portage Service)
- work with schools
- work with other partner agencies, e.g. health
- Statutory Assessment.
- The service works through consultation with individuals and
groups of children with additional and special educational needs,
school staff, families and other agencies.
- Within the service individual Educational Psychologists take
county responsibility for specialisms including: Early Years,
Portage, Hearing Impairment. Within teams individuals take on
responsibility for developing service approaches to autism, ADHD,
Early Years, supervision and consultation.
- Our work includes:

- assessment
- consultation and problem solving
- planning effective interventions with parents, carers and
teachers
- developing emotional literacy
- research and development of approaches to social and
educational inclusion.
- Referral to an Educational Psychologist is generally made
following a school planning meeting or a meeting with the school
Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator.
- Bill Herbert, the County Educational Psychologist manages the
service, which has a locally based team in each of the three
educational areas.
