Although there is no requirement placed on schools to give
medication to children, they do have a duty of care towards pupils
and will generally be prepared to administer prescribed medication,
if this is straightforward.
If your child has a particular medical condition or has to take
medication during the school day, you should speak to the school to
agree how they will manage this. Schools work in partnership with
health professionals and would seek advice if this were needed. In
more complex cases, a parent or carer may be asked to go to the
school to give their child his or her medication, or a different
solution may need to be found.
It is important that you tell the school if your child has any
medical condition that may need treatment, such as asthma. Local
health staff would support a school with training if this were
appropriate.
