The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award aims to provide an
enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal
development for young people, which is of the highest quality and
the widest reach.
It is available to all young people from 14 to 25
years of age irrespective of their academic, physical or social
situations. Its focus is on personal challenge, not a competition
against others. Young people are encouraged to design their own
programme of activities.
There are three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold, each level can be
accessed separately or a young person may progress from one level
to the next.
Each level has four sections with a fifth at
Gold
Volunteering
To give up time to help others and to contribute to the
community.
Skill
To take up a new interest or hobby, or to continue with an
interest.
Physical
To
participate in a sporting or dance activity to improve
fitness.
Expedition
To encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery. Working in small
groups, they be train, plan, prepare for and undertake an
unaccompanied adventurous journey in the countryside. (with
appropriate supervision)
Residential (Gold
only)
To broaden young people’s experiences through involvement with
others over a five-day period.
The Award has a 50
year track record of accrediting young people’s achievement, in
Suffolk it is operated in schools, youth centres and voluntary
organisations, as well as in a network of open award groups for
those not part of a recognised organisation.
