The Suffolk bye-laws say:
- children under the age of 13 are not allowed to work
- every young person who works must have a work permit
- you can wait on tables, but you are not allowed to work in
kitchen areas.
A young person aged 13 and above may be employed in a
café/restaurant/hotel subject to the days and hours below:

Advice:
- Make sure you are aware of Health and Safety procedures and
that you are aware of what to do in the event of a fire.
- Check that you are properly trained.
- Don't be tempted to work extra hours.
- Don't be afraid to say NO if a job is unsafe.
- Take care when carrying hot drinks, plates and boiling
water.
- Make sure you wear protective clothing.
Notes:
Make sure your employer has completed a risk assessment.
A work permit may be withdrawn or amended at any time by
the Director of Education if it is established that the employment
is affecting your education.
Remember, you cannot work without a work permit.
