Thinking about babysitting

Stop - Think About Getting A Part-Time Job

Ready

Go - To work

  • You do not need a work permit to babysit
  • There is no law about the age that you can babysit
  • The parents/carers of the baby/young child who employ a babysitter under the age of 16 are legally responsible for anything that happens
  • Babysitting is a big responsibility.  If you are under 16, think carefully before you decide to look after a young child
  • If your school offers courses on babysitting or first aid take advantage of any training or advice on offer.

Advice:

  • Have a contact telephone number for the parents/carers available
  • Know what time to expect their return
  • Know how safety equipment works (e.g. stairgates and fireguards)
  • Keep hot drinks, matches and lighters out of reach of babies and small children
  • The safest way for a baby to sleep is on his/her back
  • Know the best way to leave the home in case of a fire
  • Keep little children and small toys apart - they can choke on small toys
  • Have your own parents'/carers' or a neighbour's telephone number who would be able to offer advice should you need it.
